How can employers provide support to women in the workplace who are going through menopause?

We aim to spotlight the topic of menopause in the workplace, a subject that is currently under-discussed. There is a pressing need to enhance awareness in workplaces as both women and men today possess limited knowledge about menopause. Many women are unprepared when they enter menopause and do not know what to expect.

Did you know that 37.8% of all women have considered changing jobs due to menopause? And 6% have actually done so.

This was established in a study conducted by the consultancy firm BeGreat, available at BeGreat.se.

Approximately three out of four women experience problems related to menopause. These menopausal difficulties can persist around the clock, implying that they also occur during work hours. This can be taxing and challenging for some women to manage their work while affected by menopausal symptoms. Menopause is an occupational health issue for several reasons since the physical and psychological changes experienced by women during this time can impact their job performance and well-being at work.

Menopause in the eyes of the law - What Applies?

No specific law covers menopause; however, workplace health and safety legislation, anti-discrimination laws, and related regulations are indirectly applicable. As a manager, you have certain obligations to support employees through menopause, derived from these laws and regulations.

What can employers do to provide support?

Raise Awareness – Educate and inform managers and employees about menopause to make the condition more understood and to create a workplace where women feel comfortable communicating their needs.

Flexibility and Understanding – Allow for flexible working hours and the option for remote work.

Health and Well-being – Provide support, guidance, and information on how to manage menopausal symptoms. By doing this, employers demonstrate their value and care for their staff, supporting them through menopause. This can help retain experienced, skilled, and valuable employees.

Communication Channels – If you are experiencing mild symptoms, there are several steps you can take to improve your well-being. Regular exercise, adequate rest, and a healthy diet are often beneficial. Remember to be kind to yourself.

To establish an inclusive work environment, we need more than just flexibility and customized spaces. We require a culture of mutual respect where all employees are valued. Actively supporting women’s health in the workplace enhances both well-being and productivity.

Effects of menopause in the workplace

The rollercoaster of hot flashes and sleep disturbances brought on by menopause can turn any workday into a challenge, as these fluctuations can impact productivity. A night marred by sweating can rob the morning of its sharpness, and sudden heat waves can turn crucial meetings into sweaty endeavors. Mood swings can also affect relationships and communication with both colleagues and clients.
